About P.S. 770, The New American Academy
Seats in Pre-kindergarten Through Third Grade Still Available for 2019-2020
Our school fosters teacher collaboration and strong bonds with students and their families that last beyond graduation.
At PS 770, The New American Academy, we are dedicated to innovation and best practices in the classroom from Pre-K to fifth grade. Education visionary Shimon Waronker opened The New American Academy in 2010, borrowing ideas from some of the country's best-known institutions in order to create a school in Brooklyn where teachers work collaboratively and forge bonds with students that last for years.

Our method. At P.S. 770, each grade is a cohort of 50 to 60 students, taught in an open classroom by a team of three or four teachers. The teachers stay with those students for three years, building rich, long-term relationships that deepen year to year. The team meets for 90 minutes every morning, with more time each week set aside for reflection, and is guided by a master teacher who has at least ten years of teaching and leadership experience. Each of our master teachers serves as a mentor to the teachers, a counselor to the students, and a trouble-shooter in the classroom. Our methods allow the instructors to tailor lessons to meet their students' needs.
|
Our curriculum consists of Common Core aligned instruction in literacy, math, science, and social studies. In addition to daily guided reading and math groups, we allot 40 minutes for additional small group instruction. All of our students learn these core skills through six interdisciplinary units: agriculture, medicine, transportation, energy, engineering, and communication. At the end of each unit, we hold a school-wide Curriculum Celebration, during which parents are invited into the classroom, where students explain what they have learned.
|
Our HEARTS. P.S. 770 believes in our HEARTS values: Humility, Empowerment, Aspiration, Responsibility, Teamwork, and Scholarship. Students attend a town hall twice a week to discuss the HEARTS values and how to show them in school and at home. Those who show tremendous HEARTS are recognized at town hall and join our "HEARTS Wall of Fame." We reinforce these values in the classroom through our HEARTS charters and in the home though our parent forums and teacher/parent communication.
